But what happens when the body is in the middle of a metabolic roundabout and hesitates to choose a path? Because the body actually prefers to function in one way at a time. In this respect, the modern diet, with its chaotic mix of fat, sugar and other energy sources, is poorly adapted to the evolutionary design and function of the human animal.

But what happens when fat and carbohydrates are combined in the same meal? The body actually struggles to choose which energy source to use, which creates metabolic inefficiencies and leads to increased fat storage.

Alcohol as fuel: The third energy mode

Muscle preservation in different energy modes
The body treats muscles differently depending on the fuel it is using. During ketosis, the body is good at spare muscle tissue because ketones reduce the need for glucose.
In a sugar-burning state, insulin protects muscles by promoting protein synthesis.
When alcohol is consumed, however, muscle repair is disrupted, and the risk of muscle loss increases over time.
