

Carnivore – healthy or dangerous?
A carnivorous diet can be well defended with several biological, evolutionary and health arguments. There is no basis to say that it is a dangerous diet – quite the opposite. Here are some important points:
Bioavailability and digestibility:
Animal foods generally have very high bioavailability, meaning that the body can easily absorb and use the nutrients. Protein from meat contains all the essential amino acids in the correct proportions for humans, and animal fat is an efficient source of energy.
Additionally, meat and fat are digested more completely in the small intestine, reducing the strain on the digestive system.
Evolutionary basis
Throughout much of human evolution, we have been adapted to a diet based on meat and fat. Ice ages forced our ancestors to survive on animals that they hunted, because plant-based foods were unavailable for much of the year. Evidence from archaeology, such as isotope analyses of fossils, shows that our ancestors were hyper-carnivores, with a diet that consisted largely of animal foods.
Our digestive system
The human digestive system is more adapted to animal foods than a heavily plant-based diet. This is shown through:
- Shrunken cecum (appendix): A large cecum is used to ferment fiber, as in herbivores. In humans, it has shrunk to an insignificant size, suggesting that we have abandoned our dependence on plants for energy.
- Stomach acid: Humans have a very low pH in their stomachs (around 1,5), which is similar to carnivores and adapted to break down meat and protect against bacteria from animal food.
- Short intestine: Compared to herbivores, we have shorter intestines, ideal for absorbing nutrients from meat, rather than fermenting plants.
How quickly the body breaks down and absorbs meat
Meat is actually digested very efficiently compared to many other foods, and it already starts in the stomach:
In the stomach:
- Stomach acid (with a pH of 1,5–3) breaks down the proteins in meat using the enzyme pepsin. This happens quickly, especially with easily digestible proteins from animal foods.
- Stomach acid denatures proteins, making it easier for enzymes to break them down. Meat usually stays in the stomach for 2–6 hours, depending on the amount and fat content.
In the small intestine:
- Most nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine. Proteins from meat are broken down into amino acids, and fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol, which are quickly absorbed through the intestinal walls.
- Within 4–6 hours, a large proportion of the nutrients from the meat can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Fat may take a little longer due to a more complex absorption process via the lymphatic system.
The whole process:
- For the most part, meat is digested and absorbed within 12–24 hours, depending on the amount, fat content, and the body's metabolic state (for example, ketosis can optimize fat digestion).
Does meat rot in the intestines?
No, this is a silly myth, and it's time to put it to rest (pun intended)! Meat doesn't rot in the gut. Rotting food is the result of microbial decomposition, which happens outside the body, in the absence of stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Here's why this myth doesn't hold water:
Strong stomach acid:
- Stomach acid is so acidic that it effectively kills bacteria and breaks down meat before it reaches the small intestine. This creates an environment that is unfavorable for “rotting.”
Efficient digestion:
- Proteins and fats are broken down into basic building blocks (amino acids and fatty acids), which are quickly absorbed. Little is left as “food” for bacteria in the colon.
What about gas and odor?
- If people experience bloating or bad breath after eating meat, it is often due to other foods in the meal, such as fiber or carbohydrates, being fermented by bacteria in the colon. Meat is not fermented in the same way.
The intestinal flora:
- On a carnivorous diet, the intestinal flora adapts by producing fewer gases and less fermentation activity, because meat does not provide the same substrates as fiber from plants.
Why did this myth arise?
This myth is likely part of the propaganda of those who want to promote plant-based diets. Many misconceptions about meat stem from oversimplified or flawed scientific studies that often ignore human biology and evolutionary history.
The myth of danger:
The fear of a diet based on meat and fat stems largely from modern nutritional dogmas, which are not supported by historical or biological facts. Populations such as the Inuit, Maasai and Sami have traditionally eaten almost exclusively animal foods and have been healthy, with a low incidence of lifestyle diseases. New research challenges old hypotheses that saturated fat and cholesterol are dangerous, and shows that it is not necessarily linked to cardiovascular disease.
An efficient energy system
Humans are biologically designed for ketosis, a state in which the body burns fat as its primary source of energy. This is supported by the fact that we have high energy needs in the brain and are extremely efficient at burning fat. An animal-based diet fits well with this physiology.
Micronutrients
Meat, organs, and fat contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals in forms the body can easily absorb, including B12, heme iron, zinc, magnesium, K2, and omega-3. Unlike many plant sources, animal foods do not contain antinutrients that inhibit the absorption of these substances.
Evolutionary perspective on plants
Plants are not necessarily designed to be human food; many contain natural defense mechanisms such as lectins, oxalates, phytic acid, and tannins, which can interfere with digestion or absorption of nutrients. As we moved away from plants and toward a more animal-based diet, we adapted to exploit energy and nutrition from fat and meat.
Modern health benefits
Many people who follow a carnivore diet report improvements in autoimmune disorders, digestive issues, mental clarity, and energy levels. This is likely due to the elimination of potentially irritating substances in plant-based foods and optimal access to nutrients.
Conclusion
Human evolution and physiology indicate that we are well adapted to a diet based on animal foods. A carnivore diet provides all necessary nutrients in an easily digestible and highly bioavailable form. Compared to many modern diets, which are often heavy on processed foods and problematic plant sources, a carnivore diet is natural and balanced for the human body.
Meat is efficiently digested and absorbed as nutrients without “rotting” in the intestines. The myth of rotting is based on misunderstandings and a lack of understanding of how digestion works. Meat is a natural part of the human diet and is optimal for our bodies.
