dr. Georgia Ede
dr. Georgia Ede, the author of Change Your Diet: Change Your Mind is a Harvard-educated, board-certified psychiatrist who has revolutionized the approach to mental health by putting nutrition in the center. She is an exceptionally productive article writer and a massive inspirer, and a significant player in the larger community that focuses on health is in the food.
Dr. Ede also highlights the carnivore diet as a powerful problem solver, and she herself experienced getting rid of her own physical and mental ailments by eating an almost completely plant-free diet.
Dr. Ede challenges traditional psychiatry thinking and shows how strategic dietary changes can alleviate, or even resolve, mental health problems. In the most severe cases, it is carnivore that is pulled out of the toolbox.
She usually says, with a twinkle in her eye, that they have now discovered that the brain is part of the body, and that if the body gets good nutrition, and complete nutrition, then the brain gets it too.
She emphasizes that it would be very strange if each organ in the body needed different dietary principles, and that if you can manage to feed the body properly, avoid toxins and breakdowns, and ensure good access to energy, then the body is able to fix most things – including problems that have traditionally been separated out as “mental problems” and “your mother» – the latter also a typical joke from this very entertaining speaker.
Dr. Georga Ede's work inspires many who seek an alternative to medication, and other professionals have begun to wake up to her groundbreaking work in mental health and wellness.
Background
Dr. Ede began her career with a very solid scientific background. After earning a bachelor's degree in biology from Carleton College, she worked as a research assistant in biochemistry, wound healing, and diabetes.
She then went on to medical school at the University of Vermont and completed her residency in psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital in 2002.
During her time at Harvard University Health Services from 2007 to 2013, she brought in a unique offering: nutritional consultations as an alternative to traditional medication.
This groundbreaking work made her the first psychiatrist at Harvard to actively combine nutrition and mental health. She later brought this experience to Smith College, where she helped students for five years.
Since 2018, she has dedicated all her time to writing, lecturing, and advising in the field of nutritional psychiatry.
One of Dr. Ede's central messages is, as mentioned, that the brain, as the most energy-intensive part of the body, needs proper nutrition. The special thing is that this nutrition should be fat.
The brain is made up of almost 60% fat, and the right type of fat is crucial for its function. Ketogenic diets, which shift the body to burning fat instead of carbohydrates, provide the brain with a clean and efficient source of energy in the form of ketones.
This can help stabilize mood, improve concentration, and reduce inflammation. Essential fatty acids, especially omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish, eggs, and grass-fed meat products, are critical for maintaining cognitive function and protecting against mental disorders.
In addition, Dr. Ede challenges the widespread the demonization of cholesterol, which she shows is essential for neurotransmitter production and communication between nerve cells. She strongly warns against low-fat diets, which she believes starve the brain and increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.
On its website, Diagnosis Diet, Dr. Ede shares evidence-based articles that reveal how food affects both mental and physical health.
Articles like “Your Brain on Fat: Why Dietary Fat is Key to Mental Health” og “The Low-Fat Lie: How Cutting Fat Harms the Brain” are valuable resources for anyone who wants to understand the link between nutrition and mental health. Find tons of resources at the bottom of the article.
Dr. Ede is also an inspiring and entertaining speaker who presents heavy scientific material in an easy-to-understand and popular way. She has shared her knowledge at conferences such as Low-Carb USA og CarnivoryCon.
Her lectures, often with titles like “The Brain Needs to Eat: Why Fat is Essential for Mental Health”, combines humor, science, and practical advice to help both professionals and the general public understand the importance of nutrition for mental health.
She gives hope to many and shows that simple, yet fundamental, changes in diet can make a huge difference.
