Nina Teicholz

Nina Teicholz began her journey into the world of nutrition almost by accident. She originally had a career as a journalist and author, with articles published in major publications such as The New York TimesThe New Yorkerand The Economist,.

Teicholz first encountered the field of nutrition while working on a series of food reviews for a newspaper. The assignment led her to explore various dietary trends and eating habits, and she began to notice how much of the established advice around fat and health seemed inconsistent and contradictory.

It was this wonder that inspired her to dig deeper. As she researched the topic, she came across a wealth of historical and scientific studies that didn't align with prevailing nutritional dogmas.

She was particularly fascinated by how the science behind low-fat diets and the demonization of saturated fat was often poorly founded. This work developed into a ten-year research project that ultimately resulted in the book The Big Fat Surprise.

The book established Teicholz as a major voice in the nutrition debate, and she has since become a fervent advocate for reexamining the dietary recommendations that have dominated public health policy. She has been particularly concerned with how nutritional science has been influenced by political, economic, and industrial forces, which she believes has led to misconceptions that have had serious consequences for public health.

Nina Teicholz entered the field of nutrition without a formal scientific background in nutrition, but with a solid background as an investigative journalist and writer. This background influences her approach, as she has spent many years investigating and uncovering structures, fallacies, and potential conflicts of interest in the field.

Instead of conducting research in a laboratory, Nina Teicholz delved into historical sources, reviewed scientific publications, and interviewed key players in nutrition research, which ultimately led to the book. The Big Fat Surprise.

The Nutrition Coalition

Today, Teicholz leads the organization. The Nutrition Coalition, which works to ensure that national dietary advice is based on solid, objective science, which they currently do not.

She also continues to write, lecture, and participate in debates on nutrition and public health. Her work is often controversial, as she challenges powerful forces in both academia and the food industry, but she has also won great respect for her thoroughness and ability to popularize a complex topic.

Teicholz's work has played a central role in the ongoing discussion about how we can improve public health by rethinking what we actually eat.
